FÖSS met with Ostrobothnian youth

After having attended the Lokaali (Local) seminarium in Vaasa, 2 - 3 October, we continued, Kristin Mattsson and Eelin Hoffström, to Bergö, one of our member islands, on Saturday, 3 October. There we met with representatives of Bergö Öråd (the local citizens association) and Bergö Ungdomsförening (the association representing the younger generation of Bergö).

We gave an overview on FÖSS and on the projects currently underway. Eelin, in particular, talked about our networking project for youths. We hope that the juveniles of Bergö will discover what the FÖSS youth work has to offer, and what kind of opportunities regarding exchange and experiences it will be able to provide.

Our concrete cooperation with Bergö will continue next spring with a course in the realm of the project Digivideo to be arranged on the island. We are looking forward to seeing the films the youth of Bergö will produce.

The Finno-Swedish actors of Finland in the field of rural issues came together — FÖSS attended the meeting

The second "Tampere meeting" was held in Tampere, at hotel Victoria, on 24 November. One of the issues deliberated at the meeting, inter alia, was the Finno-Swedish parliament on rural questions, to be organised at Haikko Manor in Porvoo, 25 - 26 September 2010, the theme of which will be "Large municipalities, small villages? Local democracy as studied through a lens". This eleventh parliament on rural questions - and at the same time a celebration of the process since its initiation in the year 1990 - is intended for delegates able to consider the questions to be treated. One of the issues actively discussed at the Tampere meeting, was how to select these delegates.

The Tampere meetings are arranged in turns by Svensk Byaservice (the Finno-Swedish Village Service) and the rural network unit located in Seinäjoki. The persons invited to these meetings are representing, 1) the bilingual action groups (I samma båt rf - Samassa veneessä ry, Pomo väst rf, SILMU ry and Aktion Österbotten rf), 2) the regional village organisations (Varsinais-Suomen Kylät ry - Egentliga Finlands Byar rf, village work within the realm of Aktion Österbotten rf, Västnylands Byar rf and Östra Nylands Byar rf), and 3) Svenska Temagruppen (SveT; the Finno-Swedish Thematic Group) within the realm of rural development, POP (the Leader-type work in towns) and Finlands öar rf - Suomen saaret ry (FÖSS).

The actors in the field of rural issues will meet next time in spring 2010.

FÖSS is looking for a staff member

Our secretary, Ms. Kristin Mattsson, has been offered a new vacancy outside FÖSS, and, accordingly, she will leave her secretarial post at the annual general meeting in March next year. Thus, FÖSS is looking for a successor to her, a person who perhaps would also be able to coordinate the projects of the association. There are good openings to apply for and to coordinate new projects in the future.

Members and other interested persons willing to work with island issues are requested to get in touch either with Ms. Kristin Mattsson or Ms. Pirjo Hoffström, chairperson of FÖSS.

The address of the association is until further notice the same as earlier, i.e. Tehtaankatu 2 in Turku.
