A PDF list of FÖSS grants and projects is available in Finnish and in Swedish. VirtuVirtu (Virtual Elderly Care Services on the Baltic Islands) is an border crossing project, coordinated by the Turku University of Applied Sciences. FÖSS is one of the other partners of the project. The Virtu channel is a new kind of social media and well-being service for elderly. The aim at the individual level is to help elderly in the archipelago area to live at home, support their social interaction, improve their quality of life and increase their safety. The larger-scale aim is to create a functional social and health care service model based on the use of virtual technologies for the archipelago areas. The service can be used with a user-friendly video conferencing device. With the device, a group of people can see and hear each other simultaneously. The service is currently developed in close coopearation with elderly living in the archipelago areas of Finland, Åland and Estonia. Virtu is a three-year EU project, which will be carried out during 2010-2013. Contact the elderly care services of your municipality, if you would be interested in participating in the project. Additional informationArchipelago StoriesIn June 2010 work on the new project, Archipelago Stories (as a matter of fact Voices from the Archipelago: reminiscences and stories from the archipelago and Stories as a Cultural Heritage of the Archipelago) was initiated. The idea of the project is to preserve reminiscences connected with the archipelago, and to visualise stories from the archipelago. Stories and reminiscences are to be collected by means of interviews, storytelling workshops, boxes of reminiscences, and by writing down one's story in person. The project is supported by Svenska kulturfonden and the Ministry of Education and Culture. Additional informationProject Leader
Cultural millThe idea of the project Cultural mill – From creative activity to experience tourism in the archipelago (Swedish: Kulturkvarnen, Finnish: Kulttuurimylly) is to present and market services of cultural actors of the archipelago, together with the marketing of other tourism services of an area. We are now getting ready for the year 2011, which at the same time is celebrated as the year of cultural capital in Turku, and this means that it would be easier for the cultural actors of the archipelago to state their businesses as well. The cultural offers will be parcelled up in the form of marketable packages that are presented by means of the marketing channels of various retailers. The next phase will be to present the producers of cultural items at various tourism websites, and to provide links to the websites of the actors in order to improve visibility. Please, contact Ms. Pirjo Hoffström as soon as possible, in case you are interested. It is free of cost to participate. The project is supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Verkko – NätetVerkko – Nätet was launched in the autumn of 2008 as a part of the project Digital video as a tool for the island youth and digital forum, and is now continuing within the project Network and digital forum for the island youth. The aim is to bring together young people in the province of Western Finland. The main goal of the project is to create a permanent network for young islanders. Starting exchange between youth living on islands in Finland and offering possibilities for international exchange between islands in Europe are longer term targets. A group on Facebook and a discussion forum have been opened for young people who live on islands or archipelagoes. A writing competition was organized with the idea of getting youth involved into writing about their island and life there. The articles had to be written in Finnish or Swedish to emphasize the equality between the languages. Now the texts need to be illustrated and published. The project is supported by the Ministry of Education and Culture via the State Provincial Office of Western Finland. Additional information
DigivideoDigivideo was launched in the autumn of 2008 as a part of the project Digital video as a tool for the island youth and digital forum. During the five course weekends youths from Iniö made together eight fine short films about the archipelago, the sea, their own surroundings. In the spring the course was arranged at Velkua where local youths produced, among other things, a short documentary about the famous Velkua ape. The course continued at Rymättylä as a part of the project Network and digital forum for the island youth. The idea of the project is to make it possible for the island youth to become acquainted with the production and the technical means of film making, perhaps the most important current means of communication, under the guidande of professionals but using ordinary facilities. It is also important for them to learn about the cooperative and communicative strenghts and opportunities that are connected with the production of a film. The target group is the island youth in the age category 13 to 25 year, flexibly implementing the local circumstances, however. On the islands of Iniö and Velkua Lotta Petronella has acted as the direktor, while Aapo Lettinen has had the roles of the technical instructor and coordinator. At FÖSS the responsible persons are Eva Lettinen and Aapo Lettinen. The project is supported by Konstsamfundet, Svenska kulturfonden and the State Provincial Office of Western Finland. Stepping StonesThe aim of the Stepping Stones – Development plans for small islands project is to develop the archipelago with a special emphasis on small islands that are without a permanent road connection with the mainland. The project will try to increase the islanders possibilities to influence and develop their environment. The basic idea is that the islanders should be encouraged to take active part in the new communities. One of the goals is the creation of concrete village plans in close cooperation with local village associations and other local actors. The islands of the project were Borstö and Nötö in Nagu (Väståboland), Palva in Velkua (Naantali), Ruotsalainen in Rymättylä (Naantali) and Vänö in Dragsfjärd (Kimitoön). The project ended on 31 October 2009 and resulted in three village plans that cover Nötö, Ruotsalainen and Vänö, three island villages in three different municipalities. The project is supported by Leader and Svenska kulturfonden. Additional information
